Bi-Partisan Effort Ending Cruel Experiments

In a new column titled “Puppies Over Politics” published in U.S. News & World Report, PUPPERS Act co-sponsors Representatives Dave Brat (R-VA) and Dina Titus (D-NV) explain how they’ve been able to win strong bipartisan Congressional support to cut painful and wasteful dog experiments at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Join them and urge your Congress members to support the bipartisan PUPPERS Act to end taxpayer funding for painful dog experiments at the V.A.

PUPPIES OVER POLITICS

Congress must stop the cruel experiments the VA is conducting on dogs.

Reps. Dave Brat (R-VA) & Dina Titus (D-NV)
August 10, 2017

In an era consumed by partisanship and deep policy divides, Republicans and Democrats appear far apart on major issues dominating the headlines. But there are two notable exceptions – veterans and dogs – and we are leading a new bipartisan effort to score a win for both.

In mid-July, The New York Times noted the Veterans’ Affairs Committees in both the House and Senate were a “case study in Washington working as designed.” Veterans issues, from accountability reform and whistleblower protections to the “forever GI bill,” appear to be among the few things folks in Washington can agree on.

After learning that the Department of Veterans Affairs was using taxpayer dollars to buy dogs, breed them and subject them to painful experiments, we both agreed that something had to be done.

The result is the Preventing Unkind and Painful Procedures and Experiments on Respected Species Act – the PUPPERS Act – to stop the VA from using taxpayer dollars for the agency’s most painful experiments on dogs.

We are proud to have introduced the bill with several of our congressional colleagues who are military veterans; and we are excited we have already had bipartisan success to cut waste and protect animals.

The House passed an amendment we sponsored in the “minibus” spending package to implement this prohibition for one year. That is a promising first step. But Congress must work to make it permanent.

Frankly, details of the VA’s dog experiments almost amount to torture. Recent and ongoing VA research on hundreds of dogs involves causing heart attacks in hound-mix puppies and giving methamphetamine to narcoleptic Dobermans. Some of these experiments are categorized by the VA as involving extreme pain and distress that is left unrelieved.

Beyond the upsetting details of the actual experiments, new exposes of these cruel and unnecessary experiments have identified animal welfare violations, oversight failures and accountability lapses. Many of these abuses and missteps were only brought to light through repeated requests from a tenacious nonpartisan taxpayer watchdog group called White Coat Waste Project.

A new VA oversight report prompted by complaints from advocates and Congress members found the Richmond VA Medical Center approved questionable, painful heart failure experiments on dogs without adequate justifications. It also shows researchers killed dogs with botched surgeries and conducted unapproved procedures on dogs. Moreover, for years staff routinely failed to keep accurate records of how many dogs were used, whether sick dogs were provided with medical care and how dogs died.

In Los Angeles, the Greater LA VA secretively bred and experimented on narcoleptic Dobermans for more than 20 years until members of Congress helped expose the laboratory and its misleading public statements that the experiments were just “observational.” In this case, the VA announced that it intends to end the program.

Unlike many other problems in Washington, this is one that is easy to grasp and tackle. After LA’s announcement, only 3 out of the 74 VA animal research facilities still perform painful experiments on dogs: Those situated in Richmond, Virginia as well as Milwaukee and Cleveland.

Animal experiments are notoriously wasteful, and we are making technological advancements to move toward alternative methods of experimentation. The National Institutes of Health has acknowledged, “animal models often fail to provide good ways to mimic disease or predict how drugs will work in humans, resulting in much wasted time and money while patients wait for therapies.”

The NIH has ended chimpanzee research, and has said that available technologies are more accurate, faster and less expensive than animal testing. The U.S. military is moving away from using live animals in trauma medical training and the U.S. Coast Guard recently announced it was suspending its live tissue training program.

In a recent Pew poll, 80 percent of Americans stated that they do not trust lawmakers in Washington to do the right thing on most issues. Nearly the same number of Americans – 75 percent – oppose experiments on dogs, according to a national poll by Lincoln Park Strategies. Dogs are cherished pets, members of the family, faithful partners to servicemen and women on the battlefield and sources of comfort and healing to those who have returned home from war.

Passing the PUPPERS Act will protect dogs from painful experiments, trim waste and implement a change that both Democrats and Republicans can agree upon.

I’m an animal lover and a student at San Pedro High School in San Pedro, CA. I’ve always loved animals and try to do everything I can to protect them. That instinct grew stronger after I stumbled upon videos of lab animals in captivity. I saw screaming rabbits, limping rats, badly burned mice, and many more horrifying conditions.

I don’t believe animals should suffer just so we can feel more beautiful.

After watching those videos, I was determined to do anything I could to stop these practices. I started to write letters to these companies, including Neutrogena, after I learned that PETA had blacklisted the company for its animal testing practices.Neutrogena is one of the largest and most influential beauty care companies in the world.

These beauty care company labs apply and inject chemicals into the animal’s skin or eyes to test the reaction of the substance to skin and organs. These badly damaged lab animals rarely receive any care for the injuries inflicted upon them during the testing process, and all are killed when they are no longer considered useful — usually by asphyxiation (suffocation), or decapitation.

This gruesome reality is part of the reason why 50% of U.S. adults are against animal research testing — according to a recent Pew Research Center poll. But none of it is necessary. Beauty companies can use some of the many chemicals that have already been proven safe. Or, they can choose to use non-animal testing methods.

Many of these non-animal testing methods are actually cheaper, quicker, and more reliable than animal testing. This is why so many companies have made the switch from animal testing to non-animal testing. It’s time for Neutrogena to join other beauty care companies and take the next step.

Help send an important message today by signing this petition and telling Neutrogena it’s time to end its cruel animal testing programs.

Reasons for Signing

It’s absolutely incredible that a brand that advertises its products as all natural and healthy barbarically tests its products on helpless, innocent animals when it’s been proven that it’s absolutely unnecessary. Animal testing should be abolished totally everywhere and everyone should boycott Neutrogena products until they announce that they’ve done so permanently.

Victory – House Votes to De-Fund V.A. Dog Labs!

“House Votes to ban VA medical tests on dogs”
Washington Examiner | July 26, 2017

This. Is. Huge.

Tere — thanks to you, the House just voted to completely defund the Dept. of Veterans Affairs’ painful dog experiments!

Now we’re ready to take this fight to the Senate.

Follow this link to rush a tax-deductible contribution of $25, $50, $75, $100 or as much as you can to sustain the campaign.

Here’s the deal: The Senate may leave for recess in less than two weeks. And we MUST fund more ads and rally 100,000 more taxpayers while there’s momentum to de-fund.

Tere, my strategy team believes another win will create the momentum we need to “break the back” of ALL government dog labs!

The most important thing you can do right now is rush your most generous gift while the Senate is in session.

That’s why a generous new supporter will match every contributiondollar for dollar, up to $5,000 over the next 48 hours.

Let’s finish this now.

New Update On Skye! Absolutely Amazing! He is Eating On His Own!

Skye Is Eating On His Own!  Watch the Video!

This has been one of the most heart-wrenching stories to watch. This sweet dog had half of his entire head cut off. One of the most difficult aspects of saving him was that there was so much nerve damage Skye could not open his mouth. The diligent and caring veterinarians and staff performed an operation on him that had never been done before on a dog and Skye is now able to open his mouth and eat on his own!

I had my doubts as to whether Skye would ever be a happy dog again, but now I think he will be. The love and caring that Viktor and his team of veterinarians, and assistants, have given Skye has truly paid off.

Thank you, Viktor! And many thanks to all those that have donated to Skye’s recovery.

Yes, this is the face of animal cruelty, but it is also the face of Inspiration.

Although, Skye doesn’t completely understand, he knows that these people are trying to help him and he trusts them.  And these people are angels. Watch the video of the head surgeon, Dr. Jorge Llinas, clean the wound and stitch it up. Doctor of Traumatology,  Antonio Canadillos observes Skye’s jaw that he will have to unlock.

The next time you become agitated,  frustrated or angry,
compare your situation to Skye’s.

Skye is my hero.
He is a beautiful soul.
I strive to be like him, although I fall dreadfully short.
There are several more surgeries to go, but in the end, he will be whole again.

I don’t know of anyone else that would have taken Skye’s case on other
than Viktor and these Doctors.

You will learn many more details about Skye’s story.

In Skye’s case, and in almost all the cases that Viktor takes on,  I believe that vets here in the States would recommend euthanasia citing that the animal would not have a good quality of life, or that they simply could not help the animal in question.

This is absolutely untrue.

You will learn in the video that no vet in Europe would take Skye’s case, except Viktor’s vet and they will help him, just as they as in so many “hopeless cases.”.

Skye will begin his surgeries this week.

Look what I captured on video when two adolescent raccoons try and explore Downtown Pasadena in broad daylight!

I was out jogging about 7:00 PM the other evening when I could not believe my eyes! A family of raccoons was emerging out of a storm drain on the North West corner of Madison Avenue and Green Street, Pasadena!

Of course, only I was interested in this.  Cars were flying by and people were scurrying to get to their favorite restaurant for dinner.  I was so worried about them.  So, I ran over and while taping this I was trying to shoo them back in the storm drain.

The two that were emerging were clearly adolescents.  The first one, and biggest of the two, looked a bit disoriented.  Or maybe he was just curious and overwhelmed.  He was certainly not afraid of me.  The little one decided to back, back into the storm drain, but the bigger one kept on coming.

All of a sudden a much bigger raccoon, which was no doubt, mama, grabbed this big boy and drug him back into the storm drain and out of sight. It was actually the second time she did this. The first time I didn’t catch it on camera and she was clearly angry that she had to do it again.

I was so relieved.

If all the people parents in the world were as caring and protective as animal parents the world would be a much better place.

Big Game Hunter Kills This Gorgeous Animal – See What Mother Nature Had Her Soldiers Do!

Story from

Scott van Zyl, a big-game hunting enthusiast from South Africa, provided a service for interested clients to go on hunting excursions through his company, SS Pro Safaris. People would pay to hunt animals like lions, wildebeest, and rhinos.

He was certainly no stranger to the element of danger involved with hunting wild animals. One day, however, he went missing, and locals and authorities feared the worst.

While he was skilled at the safety precautions necessary to go on such adventures, it seems his hobby caught up with him. While on safari in Zimbabwe, accompanied by a tracking guide and a pack of dogs, he and the guide separated at the Limpopo River.

Scott wasn’t seen again. According to the guide, the dogs returned to the base camp without Scott, so the guide called local authorities.

They found Scott’s footprints leading to a riverbank and his backpack. There were also two Nile crocodiles nearby.

Police suspected Scott may have been attacked and killed by the crocodiles. Wildlife authorities killed the crocs and forensics experts and nature conservation services performed an autopsy, finding human remains inside.

One commenter on this story at Honest to Paws summed it up well, writing: “When you mess with God’s animals and display his beauty like he did, your days are numbered. What comes around goes around, too bad the crocs could not display him. Instead they had to pay with their lives when all they did was what came natural.”

Another noted: “I am glad that they got him, but I am very sorry that two crocodiles had to lose their lives for someone who has killed for SPORT. I can’t believe in this day and age, killing for sport.”

Still another person commented: “A fitting end for him – live by the sword, die by the sword. I’m sorry for the crocs as they were not trophy hunting just surviving.”

One person commented: “Why were the crocodiles killed just to see if they ate this douche?  If they did attack and eat him, they were just doing what comes naturally.  The hunter, on the other hand, was needlessly killing big game.  Nature will take care of thinning out big game.  These hunters are egomaniacs with a need to prove their manhood.”

Yet another person pointed out: “It’s not a ‘sport’ unless both teams know that a game is afoot and are equally ‘armed.’”

Another commenter also tried to make sense of this “sport,” writing: “Africa are now ‘farming lions,’ raise them from cubs…grown ups send them out to be killed by wealthy. Sad…these lions trust humans…then they are shot and this is called hunting…I don’t get it….what exactly kind of rush is that…like drugs…what…what would be the danger. An animal facing a man/women with a gun…20 or more yards away…with a guide there to protect you if you miss or wound.”
